Part 2.d - Character Info ( WH13/Eureka ) |
FULL NAME: Myka Ophelia Bering NICKNAMES: Myks (her former boyfriend Sam used to call her 'Bunny' but no one else does) WH JOB TITLE: Warehouse Agent DOB/AGE: February 24th, 1983 | 31 at the start of the game BIRTHPLACE: Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA GENDER: Female SEXUALITY: Bisexual SPECIES: Human FANDOM: Warehouse 13 JOURNAL: ![]() PB: Joanne Kelly CANON POINT: Post Season 3 - Current with the AU of the game Warehouse Connection: In 2009, Myka successfully saved the US President from an attack by a man being affected by an Artifact. She accurately deduced the attacker was not in his right mind (though she didn't know at the time what was affecting the man) and unarmed him without killing him while also protecting the President. This display of skill and attention to detail brought her to the notice of the Warehouse. That night Mrs. Frederic visited Myka and informed her she was being transferred to the Warehouse. APPEARANCE: She is taller than average with dark brown, naturally curly hair. If she doesn't work at taming her curls her hair will float free in a wild mess. Sometimes she straightens it, but that's a lot of work. She has green eyes. She holds herself with a beyond-her-years kind of maturity. With all the work the Warehouse demands of her she manages to stay in shape. She has the infinity symbol tattooed on her right ankle. HISTORY: Though Myka had a loving relationship with her mother, Jeanine Bering, neither she nor her sister, Tracy, were what their father, Warren Bering, wanted. He wanted sons, a fact that was not lost on Myka growing up. He was also extremely strict. Though he eventually learned that his expectations were horribly unfair on his children and he very much loved his daughters, he was never very good at expressing his emotions. To cope with her father's strictness and seeming rejection, Myka developed a severe work ethic that she not only applied to her school work, but to her hobbies as well (something made somewhat easier by her photographic memory) in the hopes that she could win his approval. Even into adulthood, when she tried to fight to urge, she still strove for her father's approval. She also dived into less girly-girl activities, like joining the Girl Scouts. Relaxing was not something Myka engaged in frequently, though in her youth she cultivated a deep love of literature and learning that would remain with her into adulthood. Her parents owned a book store, called 'Bering and Sons' - a further rub from her father, as the Berings had no sons (her father said it gave the store title a certain 'ring' and 'weight' to it. As if daughters weren't nearly as valuable.) Despite the subtle insult from her father, Myka did love the store, as the walls contained the knowledge of thousands of books. Books quickly took the place of a father figure in Myka's life, for in fiction she could find characters that played the part more readily and satisfactorily than her own father did. Myka attended Lincoln High School in Colorado Springs, where she excelled due to her scholactic aptitude and habits. She forewent the social conventions of teenage adolecences and unlike her sister, didn't endear herself in the hearts of her classmates. She was a nerd and a know-it-all, a bossy one at that, and she was particularly ridged about it. Tracy was popular. Myka was not. She did, however, pour herself into learning, and her extra-curicular activities (such as fencing). Her hard work paid off and she left home for college. At college Myka tried hard to find something she fit. She did losen up a bit at this time, away from her parents. She was starting to find out who she really was. She gave pre-med a try before pre-law, but she found herself drawn not to the judicial side of Lady Justice, but the enforcement side. She quickly discovered her skills at organization and logic worked nicely in the Secret Services. Her GPA, language skills, and extra curicular activities made her an ideal candidate to recruite straight from the university. Due to her eye for detail she rose through the ranks quickly. She was proud of her work, and she liked her job. Part of her, however, wished that her father could be equally as proud. Things were going well for her until she had her first encounter with an Artifact*, though it would be many years before she realized what truly happened. Myka had fallen hard for partner at the Colorado division of the Secret Services, his name was Sam and he returned her affection. Myka tried hard to not let their secret relationship affect her work (he was still married though technically separated from his wife and waiting to go through with a divorce, so he and Myka were keeping their relationship on the down low). And they were, for the most part, successful at this. Sam discovered one of their other partners was participating in illegal activity, and was about to expose the shady agent for what he was. Sam had planned on telling Myka right after a big assignment that demanded their attention. However, the shady agent learned of Sam's discovery and arranged for Sam to be killed. The killer used an Artifact to stop time for 47 seconds for all but that person holding the Artifact, making it so Myka couldn't reach her partner in time to save him. The killer used his stolen time to shoot and kill Sam. Myka didn't know an Artifact had been used, and thought that Sam's death was her failure to act efficently. Though she did save a number of other lives that day the guilt of letting her partner (and lover) down stayed with her until she learned the truth about the Artifact involved. Also because of this experience, wounding as it was, Myka sunk back further into her rigid organizational ways. From there Myka transfered to the Washinton DC office. She'd received a medal for her heroic efforts the day Sam died (though she didn't think she deserved it). That coupled with a glowing recommendation from ther superiors in Colorado got her the more prestigious job. She didn't know it, but once again an Artifact would change the course of her life. While on assignment guarding the President of the US while at a social function that was taking place at a mueseum, she saved the President from a man possessed by a different Artifact. Her keen observational skills were what helped her notice the odd behavior of the man and her hand to hand combat skills helped her take him down. This caught the eye of Mrs. Frederic and the Regents of the Warehouse. Myka received a transfer to endless wonder. She quickly learned 'Endless Wonder' was located in the middle of nowhere South Dakota, Univille, to be exact (and came with the unsavory perk of working with another Special Services agent named Pete, who had caused her no small amount of stress back in DC.) And then she learned what her job would entail - collecting, processing, and storing Artifacts, what ammounted to appear, at first glance, to be glorified garage-sale hunters. Myka was not happy and tried to get out of her new position. She found that was more difficult than she first thought, for once the Warehouse has its hooks in an agent it doesn't let go easily. During the compeletion of her first assignment Myka realized the job wasn't so terrible. Sure, a woman possessed by an Artifact rolled Myka's car while she, the woman, and Pete were inside it, and then the possessed woman mind-controled Myka into almost killing herself, but at the end of the day she and Pete managed to free the woman from the Artifact and they were still alive. This was what the Warehouse would call a win. And Myka discovered the detective work involved in locating the Artifact was rather thrilling. She felt her father would not be impressed that she'd been transfered to nowhere, South Dakota, (and she didn't tell them for a year) but she found the job compelling enough to forgo her father's percieved disappointment. The Warehouse was a dangerous place/organization to work for, but Myka quickly came to love her job. She liked Artie, despite how grumpy her quasi-boss was. She liked Claudia, tstheir, for lack of a better word, all around techn-o-genius. She liked Leena, the clarvoyant owner of the Inn the agents of the Warehouse Agents used (she was a type of agent of the Warehouse, just one that didn't go out on assignment. She took care of the Warehouse.) And Myka even grew to like Pete (though he still got on her nerves exceedingly so) he became something of a brother she never had. She also liked Pete, the ferret, she got him the first day at the Warehouse, when she held onto a wish-fullfilling tea kettle (she'd made an impossible wish, to be transfered away from the Warehouse, and the kettle could only give her a ferret.) At the end of her first year Myka's father was affected by an Artifact - Edger Allen Poe's pen and personal journal. Myka traveled back to Colorado to help her parents. With Pete and Claudia's help they were able to save Myka's father. Myka was also able to gain some kind of understanding with her father, Warren Bering was finally able to tell his oldest daughter he was proud of her. And then Myka meet H. G. Wells - The H. G. Wells, the auther, in fact. As it turned out, H.G. was a woman, born Helena Georgia Wells. She was a rather brilliant and charismatic person who harboured secrets of a dark past, and was sometimes hell bent on destroying the world. H.G. had been an agent of Warehouse 12, from 1889-1899. During that time her daughter was murdered, and while she tried to use time travel to prevent this tragedy, she learned her efforts were futile. Mired in grief she quickly lost control of her emotions (at one point she hunted down her daughter's murderers and brutally tortured them to death) and grew so reckless that she accidentally caused the death of a Warehouse agent. At that point H.G. requested to be bronzed, a type of cryogenic freezing, to keep her from hurting more people. Unfortunately, remaining frozen (but mentally active) for a hundred years only turned H.G. all the more bitter towards humanity. Though Myka was more irritated with the woman than anything else during their first meeting (H.G. did trap her against the ceiling!), over the course of several subsequent meetings, and as Myka learned H.G.'s past, Myka started to admire and respect the Victorian woman (beyond the respect for literary greatness, as that was already there for Myka, naturally). She sympathised with her, and believed H.G. when the other woman said she wanted to come back to be an agent at the Warehouse. She advocated on Helena's behalf to be reinstated. They worked well together - despite the fact the whole time H.G. was plotting to use her position as an agent to gain access to an Artifact that would help her destroy the world. The two grew closer and it was at this time a physical, romantic attraction was developing between them. Unfortunately, before anything could come of this attraction, H.G. betrayed the Warehouse and, as mentioned before, tried to destory the world. Myka was able to talk down H.G. for the woman hadn't counted on developing a connection to someone in this new place and time. Though crisis was averted, Myka was crushed by this betrayal, and felt a profound sense of guilt for letting her emotions get in the way of logic. She felt she should have seen H.G.'s true intentions, and because she didn't, she was complicit in the deaths of many people and the almost destruction of the world. H.G. was captured and detained. And Myka resigned, not able to process the guilt she felt for letting the Warehouse down. She returned to her home town and started working for her parent's book store. Some months later, Pete and his new partner, Steve, came to Myka for help on an assignment. Though she didn't appreciate them barging in on her life, the case involved an Artifact associated with Shakespeare, which was, admittedly, her cup of tea. She pointed them in the right direction and sent them on their way. However, after giving it some thought she decided to go after them to help. And it was a good thing, too, because Steve was affected by the Artifact and Pete didn't know how to save him. Myka did. She helped them solve the case, but she returned to her parents book store. She loved the Warehouse but she felt she couldn't trust herself not to mess up again. Mrs. Frederic tried one last time to convince Myka to come back, this time employing H.G.'s consciousness. H.G.'s punishment had been that her consciousness was separated from her body and placed in an Artifact called The Janus Coin. Her body was given new memories and sent to Wyoming to teach English at a public high school. By use of the Artifact that housed her consciousness, H.G. was able to appear to Myka in hologram form. After their conversation Myka decided to return to the Warehouse. She and Pete resumed their working partnership (Steve was assigned as Claudia's partner.) From time to time H.G. was even able to help the Warehouse. There was once incident where Pete inadvertently made Myka pregnant with another Wish-fulfillment Artifact (different from the Wish-granting Tea Kettle). Myka was NOT pleased, and may still have not forgiven Pete completely for it. A man by the name of Walter Sykes began collecting and stealing Artifacts in an attempt to destroy the Warehouse. Steve went undercover to find out his plan. In the meantime the agents at the Warehouse learned Sykes was after a woman named Emily Lake (who just so happened to be H.G.'s body) and he was also after Helena's consciousness. Myka, Pete and Claudia were not able to keep Sykes from getting to Emily, but they did get H.G.'s consciousness. Pete had a plan - to destroy the Artifact that contained H.G.'s consciousness, making it so Sykes could not complete his goals. Myka was horrified, she still harbored strong feelings for H.G. (despite the other woman's betrayal). She did not want to destroy H.G. However, H.G. agreed with Pete. Fortunately for H.G. (unfortunately for the rest of the world) Sykes stopped Pete from destroying the Janus Coin, he took the Artifact and recombined H.G. with her body. Myka, Pete, and Claudia (thanks to Steve's undercover information) learned where Sykes was hiding out and rushed to the location. GAME AU: They were able to arrive in time to prevent Sykes from killing Steve as he intended. Along with Helena's help, the Warehouse Agents were able to stop Sykes before he caused further damage. His second in command escaped to live another day, but Sykes died in the process of trying to apprehend him. Myka was more than pleased they were able to stop the bad guy and no one got hurt in the process (except the bad guy). She was looking forward to getting back to a normal routine at the Warehouse. PERSONALITY: On the surface Myka is something of a rigid, anal, control freak. This is a direct result of her father's influence (though she really doesn't want to admit that). He was a controlling man, he had strict rules and didn't bend readily. Myka has internalized this and, because of this, emulates this behavior. She does it for the same reason her father did. It's her way of making sure everyone is safe, everything goes according to plan, so that everyone can be happen at the end. When every detail is accounted for, nothing can go wrong. Or so her mind says. She tries to be as logical as possible in every situation because she learned far back in her youth when dealing with her father emotions are messy and only serve to undermine her rantional arguements. At least in her opinion. And for the most part she can succeed in this endeavor. She is very good at denying her own emotions. When situations get sticky, she will try to shove her emotions and concerns about her personal self aside so she can get the task at hand done. Romance is one of those things she'll deny herself, always pushing more towards her scholastic or professional goals rather than giving into her emotions or physical desires. She's given in a few times to these desires and, sadly, she sees a pattern forming that when she does give in bad things happen. And all of this benefited Myka up until the incident in Denver where Sam lost his life when she had her first rude awakening that you cannot plan everything, and even if you do something can disrupt those plans and change everything. She's learning how to roll with the punches - Pete, Claudia, and Steve (and even H.G.) have all helped her with this in their own ways. If she's focusing on being more relaxed she, like everything she does, can pass with flying colors. However, this is a learned trait (only Myka would need to learn how to chill) and one that flies out the window when the going gets tough. Then she returns back to her analytical, logical ways. But Myka is not unfeeling - she's just excellent at ignoring her deeper emotions because she knows they can make her act illogically, which she doesn't like thank you, dad, for teaching women's emotions are hysterical. She has a great capacity to love and care for those close to her. She loved Sam and in different ways she loves each Pete, Artie, Claudia, Steve and H.G. (and she loved Leena, too). She'll go out of her way to ensure her partner's safety. Her compassion for humanity (though maybe sometimes unwarranted, given all the horrible things she's seen people do) is unshakeable, and she tries her hardest to think of the good of the many first before her own desires. She sets impossibly high expectations for herself (and for others) and when she fails to reach them the guilt she experiences is tremendous. (When others fail to reach her expectations she has a tendency to ride them for their failure.) This guilt can be over powering, and hinder her ability to work efficiently. She particularly doesn't like strong emoitions because they make her feel like she cannot trust herself. And as with her other negative traits, she's trying to work on this. SPECIAL FACTS/SPECIAL ABILITIES: Myka has an eidetic memory. She's trained in hand to hand combate, kempo, and fencing. She has excellent marksmanship. Multilingual: (Fluent in) French, Russian, Portuguese, and Latin; (knows some of) Japanese, Arabic, and Chinese. POSSESSIONS: A Tesla A Farnsworth. Her teddy bear named 'Teddy.' A ferret named Pete. Her book collection. Have you cleared this and discussed this with the Mods? Yes Do you agree to the requirements and pre-established obligations for the character? Part 3 - Writing Samples |
1. First Person Writing Sample: Myka being a dork with Helena 2. Third Person Writing Sample: Mkya making Helena confront parts of her past 3. Third person Sample: Myka huffed at a strand of her curly hair that had fallen in front of her eyes. The gesture was as ineffectual as her current search. She was down on her hands and knees, trying to hold up the bedspread with one hand while she aimed a flash light with the other into the dusty darkness underneath. All while balancing well enough not to face plant on the rug. The large, wire cage in the corner of the room mocked Myka with its wide-swung gate and vacant confines. No other evidence at the site about the escaped convict. Did he have help? Were their witnesses, whose bodies Myka would discover during her search, killed for the inconvenience they presented the criminal mastermind behind this prison break? What gruesome scenes waited around the corner? She scanned under bed, moving the flashlight over the whole expanse and cursing how beds provided such a convenient place to store boxes. She had to scuttle around to the foot of the bed to get a better angle, and as she did so, rounding the corner, she came across the first victim. Dr. Moreau, open, shredded. The sight was horrifying. “PETE!” Her voice a mix of terror and abject anger. “PEEEETE!” she called again when movement flashed by the open bedroom door. Myka rose up on her knees and stared down the devil responsible for this carnage, bits of Dr. Moreau still clung around his mouth and in his grubby claws. But he was frozen there with large eyes turned up in an innocent fashion at her. Myka was not persuaded. “Oh you-” Unafraid, Myka started towards the hell beast, waving the tattered remains of her beloved book. And with a squeak that would fill anyone smaller than a dormouse with fear, Pete the Ferret jumped and scampered out of the room, his tiny claws scratching across the wooden floor of the hall. Myka sprung to her feet and chased after her wily pet. “Pete, get back here you- you-” and failing to find a proper pejorative for this moment, she finished with an incorrect, “You rodent!” |
